August Wilder Johnson is the pen name for my memoir-driven work. I am currently seeking professional representation for my full memoir project, which is in active development and publishing in fragmented, serialized form on Medium.
About the Proj
Pieces on the Floor: The True Story of Mentoring, Murder, and a Missing Mijo is a memoir about what happens when love, responsibility, and violence collide. August Wilder Johnson—writer, mentor, and accidental father—takes in a troubled boy and his brothers, believing that presence, patience, and care might be enough. For years, it almost is. Then the youngest brings a gun to school. Then another boy is killed. Then the child August raised disappears.
Braiding true crime with intimate family memoir and a lifelong search for meaning, Pieces on the Floor asks what we owe the children we choose, how systems fail both victims and caregivers, and what it means to keep loving someone who may never come home. This is a story about mentorship pushed past its limits, grief without clean endings, and the dangerous hope that staying might still matter.
Fragments of key chapters have begun appearing in Human Parts, Medium’s flagship publication for intimate personal storytelling, with additional installments forthcoming on Human Parts, Illumination, and others.
